Эрнест Г. Шехтель (1954) подчеркивает, что фокусировка внимания подразумевает некие общие устойчивые подходы, «нацеленные на активное умственное действие… Фокусировка внимания является инструментом, своеобразным человеческим приспособлением, с помощью которого может быть реализована способность интереса к объектам». Шехтель считает, что сильная потребность и сильный страх ослабляют способность к такому активному действию, причем как у детей, так и у взрослых.

В своих книгах, начиная с «Бегства от свободы» (1941а), я неизменно указывал на насущную потребность человека в активном постижении мира и в стимуляции. В концепции «продуктивной ориентации» эта потребность занимает место одной из важнейших ориентаций человека в процессе общения и ассимиляции; подобная направленность «активного постижения мира» служит залогом душевного здоровья, а ее отсутствие, заметное в виде скуки, представляет собой патогенный фактор, хотя в более легких случаях оно компенсируется поведением, препятствующим проявлениям сознательной скуки.
